Do You Tip Removal Men in the UK? What Movers Actually Expect
Tipping removal men in the UK is optional and not expected. Unlike hospitality, removals is not a tipped industry here – crews are paid a proper wage and no reputable firm builds tips into pay. If you do want to tip because the crew went above and beyond, £10 to £20 per mover is a normal and generous amount.
That said, after a decade of Glasgow moves, we can tell you that the things crews appreciate most are usually not cash. Here is an honest answer to a question customers ask us constantly.
Typical amounts if you choose to tip
| Move size | Common tip per mover | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Half-day, small move | £5 – £10 | £10 – £20 |
| Full day, 2-3 bed | £10 – £20 | £30 – £60 |
| Long or difficult day | £20 – £25 | £60 – £75 |
Hand it to each mover individually rather than to the driver to distribute – it is clearer and fairer. Nobody will think less of you for not tipping at all.
What crews appreciate more than money
- Tea and cold water. Genuinely. A day of carrying furniture up tenement stairs is thirsty work.
- Clear parking sorted in advance. A suspended bay outside the door is worth more than a tip – it takes an hour off the day. Our parking permit guide explains how.
- Boxes actually finished. Half-packed rooms are the single biggest cause of a day running long.
- Clear labelling and an unload plan. Knowing which room each box goes to saves everyone time.
- A written review. For a local firm, an honest review is worth more than any tip.
When a tip makes real sense
If the crew handled something genuinely difficult – a fourth-floor walk-up in the rain, an awkward wardrobe through a narrow close, or a job that ran hours past what anyone expected – a tip is a fair way to recognise it. Equally, if a crew has been careless or unprofessional, you are under no obligation, and you should tell the company.
What you should not have to pay extra for
A tip is a thank you, not a top-up. You should never be asked for extra money on the day for things that were in the original scope. If a firm quotes low and then asks for more once the van is loaded, that is not a tip – that is a pricing problem, and it is exactly why fixed quotes matter. We cover how to spot this in our removal cost guide.
Common questions
Is it rude not to tip?
No. It is not expected in the UK and no professional crew will be offended.
Should I tip for a man with a van job?
Same principle – optional. For a short man with van job, £5-£10 is plenty if you want to.
Cash or bank transfer?
Cash on the day is simplest. If you have none, offering to buy lunch is equally welcome.
Do I tip if I have already paid for packing?
No obligation. Packing is a priced service like any other.
