How to Make Moving Easier: 12 Things That Actually Save Time

Moving day goes badly for predictable reasons: boxes are not finished, nobody knows where the van is parking, and the essentials end up buried at the back of the load. Almost all of it is avoidable with a few decisions made a week or two earlier.

These are the twelve things that make the biggest practical difference, based on what we see going right and wrong on Glasgow moves every week. If you would rather hand the whole thing over, our home removals service covers packing through to reassembly.

Before you pack anything

  1. Declutter first, pack second. Moving things you do not want is the most expensive mistake in the process. Charity shop, sell, or book a house clearance.
  2. Measure the awkward items. Wardrobes, corner sofas and American fridges are the things that do not fit through a tenement close. Measure now, not on the day.
  3. Sort parking early. If you are anywhere with controlled parking, apply for a dispensation or bay suspension in advance – see our Glasgow parking permit guide.
  4. Confirm your entry date properly. Scottish moves hinge on the entry date in the missives, and it is not the same as an English completion date.

Packing that saves time on the day

  1. Pack room by room, never mixed. One room per box makes unpacking dramatically faster.
  2. Label the side, not the top. Boxes get stacked. You cannot read a lid in a loaded van.
  3. Small boxes for heavy things. Books in a big box is how boxes fail and backs go.
  4. Pack a first-night box and keep it with you. Kettle, mugs, tea, chargers, medication, bedding, toilet roll, a knife for opening boxes.

If packing is the part you dread, it is worth pricing out. Our professional packing service typically compresses two weekends of work into a single day, and the full packing cost guide shows what that costs.

The move itself

  1. Clear the route before the crew arrives. Hallways, stairwells and door thresholds should be empty and floors protected.
  2. Nominate one decision-maker. Movers work faster when one person answers questions rather than three people disagreeing.
  3. Keep valuables and documents with you. Passports, jewellery, laptops – these travel in your car, not the van.
  4. Plan the unload, not just the load. Tell the crew which room each box goes to and label accordingly. Ten minutes of planning saves an hour of shifting boxes later.

Common questions

How long does a typical move take?

A 1-bed flat is usually a half day. A 3-bed house is a full day. Stairs and parking distance are what stretch it.

Should I be there on the day?

Yes, at least at the start and end. You need to answer access questions and confirm the unload plan.

What is the one thing people forget?

Parking at the new address. People plan the collection carefully and then arrive somewhere the van cannot get to.
