Merchant City and Finnieston Flat Moves: Access Guide
Merchant City and Finnieston are both central, both popular, and both awkward to move in for completely different reasons. Merchant City has narrow historic streets and warehouse conversions with unusual internal layouts. Finnieston has event traffic and a mix of period tenements and modern blocks.
Neither is difficult once planned. Both go badly when a crew arrives without knowing which entrance to use. Our city centre removals team covers both areas.
Merchant City
The housing here is dominated by converted warehouses and former commercial buildings, which produces some genuinely unusual internal arrangements — double-height rooms, mezzanines, and lifts that were designed for goods rather than furniture.
The streets are narrow, historic and busy with pedestrians and hospitality deliveries. Loading windows tend to be early morning, before the bars and restaurants take their deliveries.
Finnieston
A mix of traditional tenements toward Argyle Street and modern apartment blocks nearer the river. The tenement end behaves like any West End close — stairs, half-landing turns, controlled parking. The modern end behaves like a city centre block, with lifts and building rules.
The distinguishing factor is events. The OVO Hydro and the SEC generate very heavy traffic and parking pressure on event days, and those dates are not obvious unless you check.
Check the event calendar
This is the single most useful thing you can do for a Finnieston move. A concert at the Hydro will affect parking, traffic and access across the surrounding streets for most of an afternoon and evening.
If your date coincides, an early start gets ahead of it. Our guide to moving on a busy Glasgow date covers the wider picture of events and fixtures.
Access checklist for both areas
- Confirm which entrance the move uses — main, service or rear
- Book the goods lift if there is one, and ask whether padding is required
- Check lift internal dimensions against your largest items
- Arrange a loading bay dispensation where the street is restricted — permit guide
- Ask the factor for the building move policy in writing
- Check the event calendar if you are anywhere near the Hydro or SEC
The LEZ line
Merchant City sits inside the Glasgow Low Emission Zone. Finnieston sits close to the boundary, and whether a particular address falls inside depends on the street.
Our vehicles are compliant either way, so this is a planning point rather than a restriction — but if you are driving your own car in on moving day, it applies to you too. See the LEZ guide.
What it costs
| Property | With lift | Stairs only |
|---|---|---|
| 1-bed flat | £200 – £280 | £250 – £360 |
| 2-bed flat or conversion | £350 – £460 | £420 – £600 |
| 3-bed or duplex | £500 – £680 | £600 – £790 |
Warehouse conversions with mezzanines or double-height rooms are usually quoted after a short video walkthrough, since the internal layout affects the crew size more than the floor area does.
Frequently asked questions
Are warehouse conversions harder to move?
Sometimes. Mezzanines and narrow internal stairs can be tighter than a standard flat. Send a video and we will assess it.
Do I need a loading bay in Merchant City?
Usually. The streets are narrow and restrictions are enforced.
Does the Hydro affect Merchant City too?
Less directly, though city centre traffic builds on major event nights.
Can you do an early morning start?
Yes, and in Merchant City it is usually the best option.
