Moving to Renfrew, Johnstone or Erskine: Area Guide

Renfrewshire is more varied than most people moving into it expect. Renfrew is riverside and well connected. Johnstone and Elderslie are traditional towns with a mix of tenement and terraced stock. Erskine and Bishopton are largely modern estates with driveways.

Those differences change what a move here costs. Our Renfrewshire removals team covers all of them.

Erskine Bridge changes your route

If you are moving between Renfrewshire and Clydebank or Dumbarton, the Erskine Bridge is almost always quicker than routing through Glasgow. It avoids the city entirely, which also means no Low Emission Zone considerations at all.

Worth mentioning when you enquire, because a firm that plans the route properly saves an hour on a cross-river move.

Modern estates need checking

Erskine and Bishopton have a lot of newer development, and modern estates sometimes use shared parking courts or narrow access lanes rather than individual driveways. They fill during the working day and can be tight for a large van to turn.

Send a photo of the approach when you enquire and we will plan the loading position rather than improvising on the morning. The same issue comes up in East Kilbride.

Johnstone and Linwood: mixed access

Johnstone town centre has genuine tenement stock with communal stairs, while a few streets out you are into terraced and semi-detached housing with driveways. Linwood is largely post-war estate housing where parking is communal rather than allocated.

As across all of Renfrewshire, the quote follows the property rather than the town — see how town centre and suburban moves differ.

What to sort in your first week

Moving into Renfrewshire from Glasgow means changing authority, and a few things follow from that.

  1. Close your old council tax account and open a Renfrewshire one. They are separate systems and will not do it for you
  2. Register with a local GP and dentist if you have moved area
  3. Check your bin collection schedule — Renfrewshire runs its own calendar
  4. Update the electoral roll at the new address
  5. Submit meter readings at both properties on moving day, photographed and timestamped
  6. Order broadband early — four to six weeks is normal, longer for new build

Our change of address guide covers the full list, including the Scottish specifics like water charges being collected alongside council tax rather than billed separately.
