Moving to Glasgow’s Southside: Shawlands to Newlands Guide

The Southside is the most varied part of Glasgow to move to. Within a couple of miles you go from red sandstone tenements in Strathbungo to detached villas in Newlands, from busy Shawlands to the conservation streets of Pollokshields. That variety means removal planning here depends far more on the specific street than on the district.

This guide covers the main neighbourhoods, what property types you will find, and what to plan for on the day. Our Southside removals team covers the whole area.

What changes your move here

Property type varies street by street

A Shawlands tenement move and a Newlands villa move are completely different jobs. The tenement needs crew hours for stairs; the villa needs van capacity for volume. Get a quote based on your actual property rather than a district average – our Glasgow cost guide shows how the two compare.

Parking is mixed

Parts of the Southside have controlled parking and parts do not. Around Shawlands, Strathbungo and Queens Park you may well need a dispensation or bay suspension; in Newlands and much of Cathcart driveway access is common. Check early using our parking permit guide.

Conservation areas

Strathbungo and parts of Pollokshields have conservation status, which affects what you can do to the property rather than the move itself – but it does mean neighbours are attentive to vans blocking narrow streets. Give notice.

Tenement access on the Southside

Southside tenements are often generously proportioned, with high ceilings and large rooms – which is lovely to live in and awkward to move out of, because furniture bought for those rooms is frequently too big for the stair turn. Measure before you buy and before you move. Our tenement guide covers the specifics.

Moving between Southside and elsewhere

Two routes we handle constantly: flats in the Southside to family homes in Newton Mearns and Giffnock, and cross-city moves to and from the West End. Cross-city moves are straightforward on distance but need parking sorted at both ends.

Planning checklist

  1. Confirm your entry date and book early – see booking timing.
  2. Check whether your street is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Measure the close and stair turn if either property is a tenement.
  4. Declutter first – a clearance is cheaper than moving what you will discard.
  5. Decide on packing early, as fragile-heavy homes benefit most.

Common questions

How much is a Southside flat move?

A 1-bed typically £200-£380 and a 2-bed £350-£600 depending on floor level and parking.

Is the Southside cheaper than the West End?

Generally yes, though Pollokshields and Newlands are premium. Our areas guide compares them.

Can you move a piano from a Southside tenement?

Yes – that is a job for our piano moving team, not a general crew.

Do you cover Govanhill and Mount Florida?

Yes, we cover the whole Southside and the surrounding areas.
