Moving to Glasgow’s West End: Area Guide and Move-Day Tips

The West End is Glasgow’s most in-demand residential district and its most logistically awkward to move into. Victorian and Edwardian tenements, controlled parking, conservation-area streets and the one-way systems around Byres Road all mean a West End move needs planning that a suburban move does not.

This guide covers what the area is actually like to live in and, more usefully, what to sort out before moving day. Our West End removals team works these streets daily.

Getting around

The Subway serves Hillhead, Kelvinbridge and Partick, and Partick interchange links Subway, rail and bus. Most of the West End is genuinely walkable. Car ownership is more of a liability than an asset in much of the area, largely because of parking.

The three things that catch people out

1. Parking

Much of the West End sits in controlled parking zones. You will very likely need a dispensation or bay suspension for the removal van, arranged in advance with a lead time. This is the single most important thing to sort – see our Glasgow parking permit guide. Also check the resident permit rules for your new address before you assume you can park a car there.

2. Tenement stairs

West End tenements are handsome and they are also three or four flights with tight turns. Measure your largest items against the stair turn diagonal, not the stair width. Our tenement moving guide explains what typically will not fit.

3. Timing around the university

Glasgow University term dates drive a huge spike in local moves in June and again in September. If your move falls in either window, book several weeks earlier than you otherwise would. See our student moving guide.

What it costs to live there

The West End carries a premium over most of the city, with Hyndland and Dowanhill at the top end and Partick offering better value. If you are weighing it against other districts, our guide to the best areas to live in Glasgow compares the options honestly.

Planning your West End move

  1. Confirm your entry date and book the mover immediately – see when to book.
  2. Apply for parking at both addresses as soon as the date is fixed.
  3. Measure the close, stair turn and flat door at the new property.
  4. Ask the factor about any restrictions on communal areas.
  5. Consider professional packing – a tenement move runs long and finishing the boxes matters more here than anywhere.

Common questions

How much does a West End flat move cost?

A 1-bed typically runs £260-£380 depending on floor level, a 2-bed £420-£600. Full detail in our Glasgow cost guide.

Can a large van get down Byres Road?

Yes, but timing matters. Deliveries and traffic make mid-morning far easier than 8am or 5pm.

Is the West End good for families?

Hyndland and Dowanhill particularly, largely for the schools. Many families later move out to Bearsden or Milngavie for more space.

Do I need storage between dates?

If there is a gap, yes – our Glasgow storage covers short-term needs.
