When to Book a Removals Company: Timing Guide for Scottish Moves
Book your removals company three to four weeks ahead for a standard move, and six to eight weeks if your date falls on a Friday, a month-end, or during the June to September peak. Same-week and same-day bookings are often possible, but you lose the ability to choose your slot and you may pay a premium.
Timing in Scotland works differently to England, and that catches people out. This guide explains when to book, why the Scottish entry date changes the calculation, and what to do when your date is not yet confirmed.
Booking windows at a glance
| Your situation | Book this far ahead |
|---|---|
| Mid-week, mid-month, off-peak | 2-3 weeks |
| Standard move, any weekday | 3-4 weeks |
| Friday or month-end date | 6-8 weeks |
| June to September peak | 8+ weeks |
| Student changeover | 4-6 weeks – see student moving guide |
| Urgent or same-day | Call for availability |
Why Scottish moves are different
In Scotland, the entry date is agreed in the missives and becomes binding once they are concluded. There is no exchange-and-completion gap the way there is in England, which means Scottish buyers usually know their exact moving date earlier – but it also means the date is far harder to shift once set.
The practical consequence is that Scottish entry dates cluster heavily on Fridays and at month-ends, so a small number of dates absorb a large share of demand. If your entry date is the last Friday of the month, book as soon as missives conclude.
What to do if your date is not confirmed
- Provisionally hold a date. Most reputable firms will pencil you in without a deposit while you wait on missives.
- Get the quote done anyway. The survey and pricing do not depend on the date, so get that out of the way.
- Have a fallback. Ask what the firm’s availability looks like either side of your target date.
- Confirm quickly once it is fixed. Provisional holds are not guarantees.
Booking around parking and access
If you need a bay suspension or parking dispensation, that has its own lead time and it is often longer than people expect. Sort it at the same time you confirm the mover, not the week before – our Glasgow parking permit guide explains the process. The same applies to city-centre buildings where the goods lift has to be booked with building management, which our city centre removals team handles routinely.
Can you move at short notice?
Often, yes. Chains collapse, dates move, and slots open up. We keep capacity for same-week and emergency moves, and smaller jobs through our man with van service are usually the easiest to fit in. Call rather than email if your move is inside seven days.
Common questions
Do I pay a deposit when booking?
Practice varies. Ask what the deposit is, when the balance is due, and what the cancellation terms are before you commit.
What if my entry date moves?
Tell your mover immediately. Most will rebook without penalty if there is notice, but late changes on peak dates are harder.
Is Friday really that much busier?
Yes. In Glasgow it is comfortably the busiest moving day of the week, and month-end Fridays are the busiest of all. Our guide to the cheapest time to move covers the savings available if you can be flexible.
