Moving to Hyndland, Dowanhill and Hillhead: West End Area Guide

These three neighbourhoods sit within about a mile of each other and feel completely different to live in. Hyndland is family territory with the schools to match. Dowanhill is quieter and greener with larger period property. Hillhead is the student and young-professional heart of the West End.

What they share is the thing that matters on moving day: handsome Victorian tenements, communal stairs, and controlled parking on nearly every street. Our West End removals team works these streets weekly.

The three neighbourhoods compared

CharacterTypical propertyBest for
HyndlandQuiet, family-focusedLarge tenement flatsFamilies, school catchments
DowanhillLeafy, residentialTownhouses, large flatsSpace and period features
HillheadBusy, central, livelyTenements and HMOsStudents, young professionals

Hyndland

The most sought-after of the three, largely for the schools and the size of the flats. Hyndland tenements are generously proportioned with high ceilings and big rooms, and they command a premium for it.

The moving-day consequence is worth knowing: big rooms mean people buy big furniture, and furniture bought for a Hyndland drawing room frequently will not come back out through the stair turn. Measure before you commit to taking it.

Dowanhill

Quieter and greener, with a mix of townhouses and large conversion flats. Access varies more than in Hyndland — some properties have their own entrance and even off-street parking, others are standard tenement closes.

Tell us which you have when you enquire, because the two are priced quite differently.

Hillhead

Right on top of the university, which shapes everything. Rents move on the academic calendar, a high proportion of flats are HMOs, and the streets are busiest exactly when everyone wants to move.

If you are moving here in June or September, book several weeks earlier than you otherwise would — see Glasgow student move term dates.

The three things to sort before moving day

  1. Parking. All three sit in controlled zones. A dispensation or bay suspension needs arranging in advance with Glasgow City Council — see the permit guide. A suspended bay at the close mouth can take an hour off the job.
  2. Stair turn measurements. Measure the diagonal clearance at the half-landing, not the stair width. That is what stops sofas and wardrobes — see the tenement guide.
  3. Timing on the main roads. Byres Road and Great Western Road are slow at 8am and again at 5pm. A mid-morning start is genuinely faster.

What it costs to move here

Floor level drives the price far more than distance does. A one-bedroom flat runs roughly £260 to £380 on an upper floor, and a two-bedroom £420 to £600. Our West End removals cost guide breaks it down properly, and the Glasgow cost guide covers the wider picture.

Where people move on to

The most common onward journey from these three is out to Bearsden and Milngavie when children reach school age, or across to the Southside for more space at the same price. Our guide to the best areas to live in Glasgow compares the options.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a parking permit to move here?

Almost certainly. All three neighbourhoods sit in controlled parking zones, so a dispensation or bay suspension is normally required.

Will my sofa fit up the close?

It depends on the half-landing diagonal, not the stair width. Send a photo of the stairwell and we will tell you before booking.

Is Hyndland more expensive to move to?

The property is, but the removal is priced on access and volume rather than postcode.

When is the busiest time?

June and September, driven by the university calendar. Book several weeks earlier for those windows.

Glasgow University and Strathclyde Term Dates: Booking Student Moves

Glasgow has four universities and a very large student population, and their tenancy cycles overlap almost exactly. The result is two hard peaks a year — late May to late June and early to mid September — when every affordable moving slot in the city disappears at once.

If your move falls in either window, the difference between booking six weeks ahead and six days ahead is substantial, both in price and in whether you get a slot at all. Our student removals Glasgow service is built around these dates.

When the peaks actually fall

PeriodWhat is happeningHow far ahead to book
Late May – late JuneEnd of year move-outs, summer storage4–6 weeks
Early July – AugustQuietest window, cheapest rates1–2 weeks
Early – mid SeptemberNew tenancies start. The hardest peak6 weeks
Late December – JanuarySmaller mid-year changeover2 weeks

September is the tighter of the two peaks because arrivals and departures overlap, and because it collides with the general house-moving season.

What student moves cost

Move typeTypical costBest option
Halls room, bags and boxes£80 – £120Man with a van
Single room with furniture£120 – £200Small removals
Whole flat share, 3–4 rooms£250 – £450One booking, split between flatmates
Summer storageMonthly rateStorage service

The cheapest approach for a flat share is almost always a single booking split between everyone, rather than four separate small jobs on four different days.

Where Glasgow students actually live

Most student housing sits in the West End around Hillhead and Partick for Glasgow University, in the city centre for Strathclyde and Caledonian, and increasingly in Dennistoun, which has become popular for rents and proximity.

Almost all of it is tenement flats, which means stairs. Pack in smaller boxes than feels necessary — you are carrying them down three or four flights. Our tenement moving guide covers the access side.

Summer storage beats moving twice

If you are going home for summer but keeping the flat or moving in September, storing is usually cheaper than paying rent on an empty room or moving everything home and back. Combine the move-out and the storage into a single booking rather than two.

Protecting your deposit

  1. Photograph everything on move-out day, timestamped, including inside the oven and cupboards
  2. Compare against the check-in inventory and note pre-existing damage
  3. Clean properly or pay someone — cleaning is the most common deduction
  4. Remove everything, including anything left in communal areas
  5. Know your scheme — Scottish deposits sit in an approved tenancy deposit scheme and deductions can be disputed

How to cut the cost

  • Split one booking between flatmates rather than booking individually
  • Move mid-week — Fridays are the most expensive day
  • Move before the September rush rather than during it
  • Collect free boxes from supermarkets a week or two ahead
  • Be packed and ready when the van arrives — waiting time is chargeable
  • See the cheapest time to move house in Glasgow

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I book for September?

Six weeks. Slots in the first half of September go earlier than any other period in the year.

Can you move me at short notice?

Often, outside the two peaks. Call rather than email if your move is inside a week.

Can you take unwanted furniture away?

Yes, through our clearance service — useful at end of tenancy.

Is a student move insured?

Yes, the same cover applies as any other move.

Glasgow LEZ and House Moves: Does It Affect Your Removal Van?

For most Glasgow house moves the Low Emission Zone makes no difference at all. It covers the city centre only. If you are moving within the West End, the Southside, the East End or anywhere in the suburbs, it does not apply to your move.

It becomes relevant in one situation: when the van needs to enter the city centre zone. Here is what that means, and the one thing worth confirming before you book any removal firm.

Where the zone applies

AreaLEZ applies?
City centre, Merchant City, BlythswoodYes
West End — Hyndland, Hillhead, PartickNo
Southside — Shawlands, PollokshieldsNo
Dennistoun and the East EndNo
Bearsden, Milngavie, Newton MearnsNo
Paisley, East Kilbride, Clydebank, LanarkshireNo

Zone boundaries and enforcement are set by Glasgow City Council and can change, so confirm the current position directly with the council if your address sits near the edge.

What it means in practice

The zone enforces against non-compliant vehicles entering it. Any established removals firm runs a compliant fleet — ours does — so for you it is a question rather than a problem.

Ask the firm to confirm compliance in writing when you book. That single line removes the entire issue, and it is a reasonable thing to ask of anyone quoting for a city centre move.

The thing people actually get caught by

Not the removal van. Their own car.

If you are driving into the city centre on moving day — ferrying valuables, plants, or the first-night box — your vehicle is subject to the zone exactly as any other is. So are friends and family helping out.

Worth a message to anyone lending a hand before the day.

LEZ is not the same as parking

These get confused constantly. The LEZ governs whether your vehicle may enter the zone. A parking dispensation or bay suspension governs where it may stop once it is there. For a city centre move you may well need both, and they go through different processes.

The parking side is covered properly in our Glasgow parking permit guide.

If you are moving into the city centre

Three things to line up once your entry date is confirmed: LEZ compliance from your removal firm, a loading bay dispensation or suspension, and a goods lift booking with the building factor. Get those in place and a city centre move is genuinely one of the smoother jobs, because lift access beats a tenement stairwell every time.

Our city centre apartment moving guide covers the building side in detail.

Checking whether your address is inside the zone

Boundaries matter most if you are near the edge, and the honest answer is that a street-level check beats any general description.

  1. Check the current zone map on the Glasgow City Council website — it is authoritative and it does get updated
  2. If your address is inside, tell your removal firm and ask for written confirmation of fleet compliance
  3. Brief anyone driving their own car in to help
  4. Remember the zone is separate from parking — you may need a dispensation as well

Areas immediately outside the boundary — the West End, Dennistoun, the inner Southside — are unaffected for a local move, though a run into the centre still crosses the line.

Frequently asked questions

Are your vehicles LEZ compliant?

Yes. There is no penalty exposure on a move into or out of the zone with us.

Does the zone operate at set hours?

It operates continuously rather than at set times. Confirm the current position with Glasgow City Council.

Does it affect my own car on moving day?

Yes, if you are driving into the city centre. The zone applies to all vehicles, not just commercial ones.

What about a business move?

Same principle but more vehicles involved — see the LEZ guide for businesses.

Moving into or out of central Glasgow? We will confirm LEZ compliance and the loading position alongside your fixed quote. Get a free fixed quote or call +44 7424 958288.

Glasgow LEZ and Commercial Vehicles: What Businesses Must Know

Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone covers the city centre and enforces against non-compliant vehicles entering it. For a business relocation that matters in one specific way: if your removals contractor turns up in a non-compliant vehicle, the penalty follows the vehicle, but the disruption lands on you.

This is what businesses need to confirm before booking, and what it means if your premises sits inside the zone. LEZ rules and penalty levels are set by Glasgow City Council and change periodically, so verify the current position with the council directly.

What the zone covers

The LEZ applies to the city centre area. Premises in the Merchant City, Blythswood, around Buchanan Street and the surrounding core sit inside it. Areas immediately outside — the West End, the inner Southside, Dennistoun and the East End — are not covered, though a move into the centre still is.

Anywhere further out is unaffected entirely. A move within Renfrewshire, East Kilbride or Lanarkshire has no LEZ implications at all.

Which vehicles are affected

VehiclePosition
Modern removals lorriesGenerally compliant — confirm with your contractor
Older vans and lorriesMay be non-compliant depending on engine standard
Hired vehiclesCompliance varies — check at the point of hire
Staff cars on move daySubject to the same zone rules as any other vehicle

The final row catches people out. If staff are driving into the centre to help with a move, their vehicles are subject to the zone in exactly the same way.

What to confirm before booking

  1. Ask your removals contractor to confirm LEZ compliance in writing
  2. Check whether any hired vehicles or contractors are also entering the zone
  3. Brief staff who are driving in on move day
  4. Confirm the current penalty position on the Glasgow City Council website
  5. Factor the zone into your route planning if you are moving equipment in stages

LEZ and loading bays are separate things

Worth being clear on this, because they get conflated. LEZ compliance governs whether your vehicle may enter the zone. A loading bay dispensation governs whether it may stop where you need it to. You may well need both, and they are arranged through different processes.

Our guide to moving a business into the city centre covers the loading side, and the parking permit guide explains the dispensation process.

If your premises is inside the zone

It does not prevent anything — it simply means every vehicle involved needs to comply. Our fleet does, so a move into or out of the city centre carries no penalty exposure from our side. The practical planning is the same as any other city centre relocation: lift booking, loading window, and a sequence that fits the building.

Planning routes and staging around the zone

If your business is relocating from outside the city centre to inside it, or the reverse, a little route planning removes the issue entirely.

  • Stage from outside the zone where the move runs over several days — consolidate at a compliant depot and run compliant vehicles in
  • Confirm every contractor entering the zone, not just the removals firm. IT installers, furniture fitters and waste carriers all count
  • Brief staff driving in on move day — private cars are subject to the same rules
  • Check hire vehicles at the point of hire rather than assuming

Businesses relocating from Renfrewshire, East Kilbride or Lanarkshire into central Glasgow are the most common case, and it is entirely routine once the fleet position is confirmed in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Are your vehicles LEZ compliant?

Yes. There is no penalty exposure on a move into or out of the Glasgow LEZ with us.

Does the LEZ apply at all hours?

The zone operates continuously rather than at set times. Confirm the current position with Glasgow City Council.

Does it affect a house move too?

Only if you are moving into or out of the city centre — see our LEZ guide for house moves.

What about premises just outside the zone?

No LEZ implications, though city centre loading restrictions may still apply nearby.

Moving business premises in or near the city centre? We will confirm LEZ compliance and the loading requirements alongside your fixed quote. Get a free fixed quote or call +44 7424 958288.

Commercial Removals Glasgow: Retail, Warehouse and Multi-Floor Moves

Commercial removals covers a much wider range of work than an office relocation. A retail unit, a warehouse and a multi-floor premises are three genuinely different jobs, and pricing one like the other is how businesses end up with a quote that does not survive the day.

This guide sets out how each type is handled and what changes the price. Our commercial removals team covers Glasgow and the surrounding Central Belt.

The three commercial move types

TypeMain challengeUsual approach
Retail unitStock volume and shopfront accessOut-of-hours, stock crated by category
WarehouseRacking, pallets and weightPhased, mechanical handling where possible
Multi-floor officeLifts and sequencingFloor-by-floor, numbered positions
Mixed premisesCoordinating all threeSurvey-led, phased over several days

Retail relocations

Retail moves are almost always out of hours, because a closed shop is lost revenue and a shopfront is rarely a practical loading position during trading. Stock is crated by category rather than by shelf, which makes merchandising at the new unit far faster.

Fixtures, gondolas and display units frequently need dismantling, and many are not designed to be moved twice — worth checking condition before you commit to taking them.

Warehouse and industrial

  • Racking usually needs specialist dismantling and re-certification rather than general removals handling
  • Palletised stock moves fastest with mechanical handling at both ends — confirm forklift availability
  • Weight distribution governs vehicle choice more than volume does
  • Access depends on yard space and loading dock height, which needs checking before quoting
  • Phasing keeps despatch running while the move happens around it

Multi-floor premises

Multi-floor moves live or die on sequencing. We work floor by floor rather than department by department, because a half-cleared floor blocks the lift for everyone. Each floor is completed and signed off before the next starts.

Lift capacity sets the pace, so booking the goods lift for the full duration rather than a short slot is usually worth the extra cost. Our office move checklist covers the building admin.

What changes the price

  • Total volume and weight, rather than floor area
  • Access at both ends — dock height, yard space, lift capacity
  • Whether the move runs during trading hours or outside them
  • Specialist handling for racking, fixtures or heavy plant
  • Whether interim storage is needed between premises
  • Disposal of stock, fixtures or waste through licensed clearance

Out-of-hours and phased moves

Most commercial relocations in Glasgow run outside normal trading hours, for straightforward reasons: a closed shop is lost revenue, city centre loading is restricted during the day, and a warehouse still has orders to despatch.

ApproachSuitsTrade-off
Single weekendOffices up to 30 staffIntensive, needs full crew
Evening phasesRetail unitsSeveral shorter sessions
Rolling phaseWarehousesDespatch keeps running throughout
Floor by floorMulti-floor premisesLift capacity sets the pace

Out-of-hours work typically adds 20 to 35 per cent to the removal cost. Against lost trading it is almost always the cheaper option. We plan the sequence around your operating constraints rather than ours — see the commercial cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do you move shop fixtures and racking?

Fixtures yes. Industrial racking usually needs a specialist dismantler for certification reasons, and we coordinate with them.

Can you work overnight?

Yes. Most retail and city centre commercial moves run outside trading hours.

Do you cover outside Glasgow?

Yes, across the Central Belt including Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire.

How is it priced?

Fixed, following a site survey. Commercial access varies too much for a phone estimate to hold.

Moving a Business to Glasgow City Centre: Access and Loading Bays

Relocating into the city centre is rarely difficult because of the premises. It is difficult because of everything around it — the Low Emission Zone, enforced loading bays, goods lifts that must be booked, and building time windows that are not negotiable on the day.

Get those three or four things arranged in advance and a city centre move is one of the smoothest jobs there is. Miss one and the crew spends the morning waiting. Our city centre removals team handles this weekly.

The four approvals you need

ApprovalWho fromLead time
Loading bay dispensationGlasgow City CouncilSeveral working days
Goods lift bookingBuilding factor or concierge1–2 weeks, Fridays go first
Out-of-hours accessLandlord or facilities management1–2 weeks
LEZ complianceYour removals contractorConfirm at booking

Council fees and lead times change, so confirm the current position with Glasgow City Council directly rather than relying on any third-party guide.

The Low Emission Zone

Glasgow’s LEZ covers the city centre and enforces against non-compliant vehicles. Any established removals firm runs a compliant fleet, but confirm it in writing before you book — a penalty arriving weeks after your move is not a conversation you want with your finance team.

Full detail in our LEZ guide for businesses.

Goods lifts are the real bottleneck

  • Most managed buildings require a booked slot, and slots are typically two to four hours
  • Many require protective padding fitted before use, which the building supplies
  • Lift dimensions decide what can go up in one piece — measure desks and cabinets against them
  • Where no goods lift exists, a stairwell move changes crew size and cost significantly

Which streets are hardest

Loading around Buchanan Street, Argyle Street and the pedestrianised core is tightly restricted, and access windows are usually early morning. The Merchant City has narrow streets and heavy footfall. Blythswood and the Broomielaw are easier for vehicle access but bays are enforced.

Whichever address you are moving to, tell us the street when you enquire and we will confirm what applies before the day.

Sequence that keeps downtime to a minimum

  1. Move non-essential storage and archive material first, out of hours
  2. Move furniture in the main window, direct to numbered positions
  3. Move IT and comms last, with your provider on site
  4. Test connectivity before anyone signs the job off
  5. Keep the old premises accessible for 48 hours for anything missed

Budgeting for a city centre move

City centre relocations carry costs that a suburban office move does not, and they are easy to leave out of a budget until the invoices arrive.

  • Loading bay dispensation or suspension — a council fee per bay per day
  • Out-of-hours building access — some landlords charge for security or concierge cover
  • Goods lift protection — occasionally chargeable, occasionally a refundable deposit
  • Weekend or evening premium — typically 20 to 35 per cent on the removal itself
  • Interim storage where the new premises is not ready
  • Licensed disposal of old furniture and confidential paper through clearance

Against those, weigh the cost of lost trading hours. For most businesses the out-of-hours premium is cheaper than a day of downtime — the full breakdown is in our office move cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you move at the weekend?

Yes, and it is often easier in the city centre because streets are quieter. Book early, as lift slots go quickly.

Do you arrange the loading bay?

We advise exactly what is needed and what to supply. The application normally goes in under the occupier or their agent.

What if there is no goods lift?

We crew for a stairwell move instead. Tell us the floor and stair type at quote stage so the price holds.

Are your vehicles LEZ compliant?

Yes, so there is no penalty exposure on a city centre move.

Relocating into Glasgow city centre? Tell us the building and the street and we will confirm the access requirements alongside your fixed quote. Get a free fixed quote or call +44 7424 958288.

Best Areas to Live in Glasgow: An Honest Guide from Local Movers

We move people across Glasgow every week, which gives an unusual view of the city: we see which areas people leave, which they move to, and why. This guide is an honest area-by-area rundown – what each place is genuinely like, who it suits, and what moving there actually involves.

If you already know where you are heading, our areas served page lists everywhere we cover.

Quick comparison

AreaBest forTrade-off
West EndProfessionals, students, cafe culturePrice and parking
SouthsideValue, variety, communityVaries hugely street to street
City centreCommuting, nightlife, no car neededLess green space
Dennistoun / East EndAffordability, up-and-comingStill changing fast
Bearsden / MilngavieFamilies, schools, spacePrice and commute
Newton Mearns / GiffnockFamilies, modern housingSuburban and car-dependent

West End

Glasgow’s most desirable district and its priciest. Hyndland and Dowanhill for families, Hillhead for students, Partick for value, Finnieston for food and bars. Beautiful tenements, excellent transport, genuinely walkable. The trade-offs are cost and parking – most streets are controlled, and moving in needs a permit arranged in advance. Full detail in our West End moving guide and from our West End removals team.

Southside

The most varied part of the city. Shawlands is busy and full of independents, Strathbungo is a conservation-area gem, Pollokshields is leafy and spacious, and Newlands and Cathcart are quietly residential. Better value than the West End with much of the same character. See our Southside moving guide and Southside removals.

City centre and Merchant City

Best if you want to walk to work and skip car ownership entirely. Merchant City has the most character, with converted warehouses and a strong food scene. Modern blocks mean lifts and concierges, which makes moving easier than a tenement – though loading bays and goods lifts usually need booking. Our city centre removals team handles this routinely.

Dennistoun and the East End

The area that has changed most in the last decade. Grid-pattern tenements, genuinely good value, a strong food and bar scene on Duke Street, and a short hop into town. Popular with first-time buyers and renters priced out of the West End. See Dennistoun and East End removals.

Bearsden and Milngavie

Where a lot of West End families end up. Excellent state schools, detached and semi-detached housing, green space, and the start of the West Highland Way in Milngavie. It is expensive and it is suburban, but for space and schools it is the benchmark. See Bearsden and Milngavie removals.

Newton Mearns and Giffnock

The southern equivalent – strong schools, modern housing, family-oriented, well served by shops. Slightly newer housing stock than Bearsden on average, and a common destination for families moving out of Southside flats. See Newton Mearns and Giffnock removals.

What your choice means for moving day

  • Tenement areas (West End, Southside, Dennistoun) – stairs, closes, and usually a parking permit. See our tenement guide.
  • City centre – loading bays, goods lifts, LEZ, building management approval.
  • Suburbs – driveway access and no permit, but larger volumes.

Access is the main thing that changes the price, not distance – our Glasgow cost guide breaks that down by area.

Common questions

Which area is best value?

Dennistoun and parts of the Southside currently offer the most for the money.

Best for families?

Bearsden, Milngavie, Newton Mearns and Giffnock for schools and space; Hyndland if you want to stay in the city.

Can I live in Glasgow without a car?

Easily in the West End, city centre and much of the Southside. Harder in the outer suburbs.

Where do most people move to from the West End?

Bearsden, Milngavie and Newton Mearns, usually when children reach school age.

Whichever area you choose, we cover it. Tell us both addresses and we will quote the full move. Get a free quote or call +44 7424 958288.

Cheapest Time to Move House in Glasgow: How to Save Hundreds

The cheapest time to move house in Glasgow is a mid-week day in the middle of the month, between October and March. The most expensive is the last Friday of the month between June and September. The gap between the two can be 20-30% of your removal cost – on a 3-bed move that is well over £150.

This guide explains why the pricing works that way in Scotland specifically, and how much flexibility is realistically worth.

By day of the week

DayDemandRelative cost
MondayModerateLow to standard
TuesdayLowCheapest
WednesdayLowCheapest
ThursdayRisingStandard
FridayVery highMost expensive
SaturdayHighPremium

Why Friday dominates in Scotland

In Scotland the moving date is the entry date agreed in the missives, and solicitors overwhelmingly set entry dates on Fridays. That concentrates a huge share of the city’s moves into roughly four days a month. Every removals firm in Glasgow is busiest on those days, and pricing reflects it.

If you have any influence over the entry date while missives are being negotiated, a mid-week date is worth asking for. Once missives conclude it is fixed – see our booking guide.

By time of month

  • Last three working days – peak. Entry dates and tenancy changeovers cluster here.
  • First few days – busy, overflow from month-end.
  • Middle two weeks – quietest and cheapest.

By season

PeriodDemandNotes
October – MarchLowestBest availability and prices. Watch the weather.
April – MayRisingSpring market picks up
June – SeptemberPeakSchool holidays plus student changeover
Late DecemberVery quietCheap but limited availability over the holidays

The June and September spikes are amplified in Glasgow by the student cycle across four universities – see our student moving guide.

Savings beyond the date

  • Reduce volume. The most reliable saving there is. A clearance before you quote often pays for itself.
  • Self-pack the non-fragile items. Consider a fragile-only pack instead of a full one – see the packing cost guide.
  • Sort parking properly. A suspended bay at the door can take an hour off the job – see the permit guide.
  • Right-size the service. For a studio, small removals or a man with a van beats a full crew.
  • Book early. Late bookings on peak dates carry the biggest premium.

When cheapest is not best

Do not chase a low price by cutting crew numbers or insurance. Two movers on a 3-bed tenement move means a long, tiring day and a higher chance of damage. Our guide on why removals cost what they do shows where the money actually goes and which savings are real.

Common questions

How much can I realistically save?

Moving mid-week and mid-month rather than a peak Friday typically saves 20-30%.

Is winter risky?

Occasionally weather causes delays, but availability is excellent and crews handle it routinely.

Can I choose my entry date?

It is negotiated between solicitors before missives conclude. Ask early if you want mid-week.

Are morning slots cheaper?

Not usually, but earlier starts mean the job finishes in daylight, which matters in winter.

Flexible on dates? Tell us your window and we will find the cheapest slot in it. Get a free quote or call +44 7424 958288.

Glasgow House Move Checklist: 8 Weeks to Moving Day

A house move goes smoothly when the decisions are made early and badly when they are made in the last week. This checklist is built around the Scottish process – where your entry date becomes binding at conclusion of missives – and around the things that specifically catch people out in Glasgow, like parking dispensations and tenement access.

Work through it in order. If you want the whole thing managed, our home removals team can handle packing, moving and reassembly.

8 weeks before

  • Get three fixed quotes based on the same inventory
  • Include the loft, garage, shed and garden in what you show movers
  • Start decluttering room by room
  • Check whether you need storage between entry dates
  • Book the mover as soon as missives conclude – see booking timing

6 weeks before

  • Decide on professional packing or self-packing
  • Order boxes, tape, paper and bubble wrap in one go
  • Book a clearance for anything not coming with you
  • Arrange disposal of anything the mover cannot take (paint, aerosols, fuel)
  • Tell your factor if you are in a flat

4 weeks before

  • Apply for parking – dispensation or bay suspension at both addresses. This has a lead time. See our parking permit guide
  • Book the goods lift with building management if either property is a city-centre block
  • Set up Royal Mail redirection
  • Notify council tax, water, energy, broadband, insurance, bank, GP, dentist, DVLA
  • Register children at the new school if changing catchment
  • Start packing anything you will not need

2 weeks before

  • Confirm crew size, van size and arrival time in writing
  • Measure large furniture against the stair turn at the new property – see our tenement guide

  • Book cleaners for the outgoing property if needed
  • Use up freezer food
  • Label every box by room, on the side not the top

Moving week

  • Pack a first-night box: kettle, mugs, tea, chargers, medication, bedding, toilet roll, scissors
  • Defrost and dry the freezer at least 24 hours ahead
  • Disconnect the washing machine and secure the drum
  • Take meter readings at both properties
  • Confirm key handover arrangements with both solicitors
  • Put a note in the close if you are in a tenement

Moving day

Common questions

When is the entry date confirmed?

At conclusion of missives. Before that it is provisional – book your mover the moment it is fixed.

What should I not pack?

Passports, medication, valuables, keys, chargers and documents. These travel with you.

How much will it cost?

See our Glasgow removals cost guide for prices by property size and access.

Can I move at short notice?

Student moves in Glasgow cost £80 to £200 for a typical single-room move and £180 to £350 for a shared flat. The bigger issue is usually timing rather than money: tenancy changeovers cluster into the same two weeks, and the cheap slots go first.

This guide covers what to budget, when to book around Glasgow’s term dates, and how to protect your deposit on the way out. Our student removals service is built around short notice and tight budgets.

What student moves cost

Move typeTypical costBest option
Halls room, a few bags and boxes£80 – £120Man with a van
Single room with furniture£120 – £200Small removals
Whole flat share (3-4 rooms)£250 – £450Split between flatmates
Storage over summerMonthly rateStorage service

The cheapest approach for a flat share is almost always one booking split between everyone rather than four separate small jobs.

Timing around Glasgow term dates

Glasgow has a very large student population across the University of Glasgow, Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian and the art school, and their tenancy cycles overlap. The pressure points are:

  • Late May to late June – end-of-year move-outs and summer storage
  • Early to mid September – the biggest crunch, as new tenancies start
  • Late December to January – smaller, some mid-year changeovers

Book four to six weeks ahead for September. Everything else can usually be arranged with a week or two of notice. Our general booking guide has the full picture.

Where students actually move

Most student housing sits in the West End around Hillhead and Partick, in the city centre near Strathclyde and GCU, and increasingly in Dennistoun, which has become popular for its rents and its proximity to the city.

Almost all of these are tenement flats, which means stairs. Pack in smaller boxes than you think you need – you will be carrying them down three or four flights. See our tenement moving guide.

Protecting your deposit

  1. Photograph everything on the day you move out, timestamped, including inside cupboards and the oven.
  2. Compare against the check-in inventory and note anything that was already damaged.
  3. Clean properly or pay someone. Cleaning is the most common deposit deduction.
  4. Remove all belongings. Anything left behind can be charged for as disposal.
  5. Know the scheme. Scottish deposits must be held in an approved tenancy deposit scheme, and you can dispute deductions through it.

Summer storage

If you are going home for summer but keeping the flat or moving in September, storing is usually cheaper than paying rent on an empty room or moving everything twice. Combine the move-out and the storage into one booking – our Glasgow storage service handles short-term student needs.

Cutting the cost

  • Split one booking between flatmates rather than booking separately
  • Move mid-week – Fridays are the most expensive day
  • Move before the September rush, not during it
  • Get free boxes from supermarkets a week or two ahead
  • Be ready when the van arrives – waiting time costs money
  • See our cheapest time to move guide
